H.R. McMaster served as National Security Adviser under President Donald Trump, helping shape U.S. foreign policy and national security decisions. A career Army officer and respected military strategist, he was brought in after the abrupt departure of his predecessor. Which meant stepping into a role where expertise was technically valued but not always particularly welcome. McMaster quickly found himself at odds with a president who preferred instinct over briefings, and that relationship didn’t exactly improve over time.
